About the venue
The Theatre Royal enjoys the title of being the oldest theatre in Glasgow. It is also proudly the longest running in Scotland.
With a total capacity exceeding 1,500 people, the theatre has been owned by Scottish Opera since 1974.
In 1977 the theatre was protected as a Category A listed building, of architectural and historic importance.
Brief
Seating in the upper circle was tired and uncomfortable. Dating back to the 1970’s the theatre staff had a constant struggle to “keep the seats going”.
A specific timber colour, upholstery fabric and general finishes were required to meet the exacting standards of Scottish Opera. Chairs would also need to “suite” with the other models on different levels in the theatre.
Some of the rows were tightly spaced which meant chairs would need to be compact but comfortable. An ergonomic design which makes the best of the available space was essential.
Solution
Our Bristol chair was the ideal starting point. Designed to meet the demands of modern theatre with styling to reflect the timeless elegance of a bygone era. The timber outer panel to the back and under seat were ideal. Offering the perfect complement to the other chairs in the theatre.
To ensure the comfort, ergonomics and walkway requirements were met the angle of the chair was adjusted. A more upright geometry allows the viewer to have a supported back whilst looking down to the stage. Chairs would also be fitted with ProBax® technology to help further enhance the experience.
The flexibility offered when proposing the finishes was imperative. The distinct turquoise fabric colour chosen back in 1975 needed to be retained. Our standard velour fabric offering had similar colours, but none close enough to satisfy the stringent eyes of Scottish Opera. The simple solution was to dye match the colour. We took samples of the existing fabric and timber parts to make exact copies. The results were clear to see, the perfect match offering complete continuity.
Then to the finer detail, seat numbering and sponsor plates. Seat number samples were produced to mimic the original “brass” finish, even the font was retained.
Solid brass sponsor plaques were provided. Only following the painstaking process of recording each dedication, word for word and documenting the exact location. This means that future generations of donates families can view the dedications and tributes for years to come.
