About the venue
St Gregory’s Catholic High School is based in the heart of Warrington.
It is a committed Roman Catholic co-educational voluntary aided comprehensive school. They educate close to 1,000 children between 11 and 16 years of age.
Brief
We were contacted by the school as they were looking to replace and improve their current seating system. Although their current unit had served them well for close to 20 years it was time for an upgrade. In doing so the school were looking for a greater capacity and a system that was easier to operate.
The school went to the market for prices and proposals with the above brief.
Following two site visits and the obligatory reference checks the school chose Audise by Race Furniture to compete the works.
Solution
When providing retractable seating solutions to schools, the most popular choice is our Encore upholstered bench seats with back rests. Optimising space along the row means seating can be maximised. Benches are upholstered using contract grade, fire retardant material and high density foam. This offers the durability required in a heavy use scholastic environment.
The unit size was specified to make the most from the available space. Riser heights of the rows were adapted to fit the existing room height. Self-storing end rails were included to reduce set up time and remove risks from falling during fitting / removal.
Side drapes were also added. These mask off the visible under structure when the unit is in the open position.
To the rear of the hall were floor mounted radiators. To prevent the added expense of relocation the rear deck was extended so they could stay in place. A small detail that ultimately removed an issue and saved on cost.
The first phase of the works was to disassemble and dispose of the existing unit. This was done to allow new floor coverings to be fitted prior to the arrival of the replacement unit. Removed components were segregated with steel being reappropriated for scrap. Not only did the school have a cost benefit, but it also ensured minimum waste going to landfill.
When we returned to site as expected the replacement unit fitted into the space perfectly. It was mounted on plywood runner boards to protect the newly carpeted floor. The final size of the boards was adjusted to the school’s requirements. This allows the fastest time for set up and break down.
Ready for school use when it’s allowed the unit will be in place for at least as long as it predecessor.
